Day 1  - Siquijor History and Culture (Meet at the Lazi Convent)

A.M.

  • Registration/Breakfast
    Welcome and inspirational talk from seminar coordinators
    Getting to know you – talk about personal and family background, ambitions./ hopes
    Sharing of book reports, discussion

  • Tour of historical structures
    Siquijor Heritage Foundation on Island Historical Structures & Restoration Efforts, Siquijor Literature, & Culture - discussion of island folklores, ghost stories, metaphysical healing (barang/pactol/wakwak),

Day 2 – Health, Sanitation and ENR

    Environment: Destruction vs. Conservation, Rehabilitation
    Water resources, management and conservation

  • SCORE on Marine-Life and Eco-Systems in Siquijor 
    Field trip to mangroves, river(s), watersheds, LOWA projects of water distribution; irrigation projects

Day 3 – Social Problems & Social Services, Law & Order, The Local Government Code and Governance

  • Social Problems and Criminality on the Island:  Poverty, alcoholism, drug abuse, child and spousal abuse, gambling, theft, rape, homicide and other crimes

Recommended speaker: Senior provincial social worker with provincial jail warden or chief of police.

Field Trip: Observe an  RTC session or visit the provincial jail and chat with the provincial warden

  • The Local Government Code & Governance
    Levels and Responsibilities of the Local Government.
  • Discuss the meaning of corruption, transparency in governance, moral ascendancy, patronage politics, intelligent voting vs. vote buying; meaning of political platform, responsible citizenship; responsive leadership, etc.

Evening-  

Movie: Dekada 70,  Q&A Session

Day 4 –The Wealth and Poverty of the Island. – Agriculture and Commerce in Siquijor  

A.M.

  • Budget Awareness – Exercises in basic budgeting from personal to family /home. barangay to town to provincial budget. Discuss expenditures vs source of income, taxes, etc.. Discussion of who are the “rich” and the “poor” in the island. Discussion on solutions to improve economy. Encourage students to talk about own situation..

Recommended speaker:  Field Coordinators  to search for speaker

  • Beyond subsistence farming, fishing and livestock raising – interactive discussions  on cooperatives, “best affordable practices” to encourage students to draw up a plan for a  viable integrated small scale agri-business enterprise: orchard development, backyard gardening & livestock raising, woodcraft, etc. Discuss ways to find needed start-up capital and technology .

  • Tree Planting – Class of 2003 & Class of 2004 in a reforestation project (Talingting?) or Bandilaan.

  • Essays (Opinions/Editorials) or Short Story Reading

Day 5 – Social Responsibility, Career Planning

A.M.

Panel Discussion on Career Opportunities in the Island and Beyond:

  • Small- to medium-scales business: sari-sari store, bakery, eatery, woodcraft & iron works, carpentry, vehicle repair and maintenance, orchard development and farming, retail trading, etc.
  • Professional and service careers: Banking, teaching, public service, agri-business, construction engineering, architecture, law and order, health care, environment protection, journalism, etc.

Recommended panel: FCs + one or two more

P.M.

  • Class Initiative - Class draws up a plan for a project for school year 2004-05: promote a high school reading program, more tree planting, bird counting, mangrove seeded fry monitoring, starting a newsletter, etc. 
  • Wrap up – write evaluation

Homeward bound.

Day 6 – Graduation/Community Bonding

Outdoor graduation and picnic attended by parents.
